Why do people wait until they’re in horrific pain, or diagnosed with a debilitating, chronic or deadly disease before they take action with their health? This topic came up Friday as we discussed wellness on Great Day.
First, Dr. Matthew Norton, a chiropractor and founding member of Fresno’s Wellness Fair talked about how so many pains can be fixed by understanding the source. Many times that source has to do with the spine and the muscles around it. I used to be so scared of chiropractors. I don’t know why. Somehow I was led to believe they weren’t real doctors, and could adjust someone into paralysis. Well, a situation of intense lower back pain last year forced me to call a friend who suggested a Clovis chiropractor, Dr. Greg Stafford, who helped me nearly immediately! He and Dr. Norton both talk about the ‘glacier’ of underlying problems going on in our bodies, but not until the tip of the iceberg hits (intense, debilitating pain) do we seek help. Now, I get adjusted on a regular basis and feel this, with regular exercise and a good diet are helping me a lot.
Also on our show Friday was Elayne Whitehead, another founding member of Fresno’s Wellness Fair who is a certified colon hydro therapist. She talked about the importance of eating fiber and nutrient rich foods, which not only help our cells, but also ensure good elimination. I know. This is stuff people don’t talk about, but lately more and more women have been talking about this to me because I’m pretty open about it in an effort to help others. For over 20 years I’ve suffered through severely painful bouts of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBS. There’s no cure. There’s no real reason for it, and every woman finds relief in different places – more exercise, less stress, more fiber, less processed foods, more sleep, probiotics, or occasional colonics. That’s how I met Elayne. When I mistakenly swallowed an apricot pit this past summer, I was frantic about my insides. She helped me flush away lots of waste, taught me the importance of changing my diet and lifestyle and gave me a lot of laughs too. So now, I’m learning to eat even more veggies and fruits. I take Juice Plus that are whole food supplements that add 31 fruits and vegetables to my body each and every day. Amazingly I’m less stressed. That’s what this healthy food does – it keeps the stress hormones in check because the cells of the body are getting the active nutrients they need. I like that I’m less likely to freak out when under stress. I like that I’m helping my body to be healthier, and stronger. Research shows it works. It’s an ongoing education and lifestyle change. I feel empowered every time I meet people like we did Friday on Great Day. I hope it helped you too.
